Los Angeles, CA—(July 23, 2010): Mercury Air Group, Inc., announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary, Maytag Aircraft Corporation, has secured a four year Defense Fuel Support Point contract with the Defense Energy Support Center (DESC) at U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Under the contract, Maytag Aircraft personnel will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, fuel quality and inventory control of the Naval Station’s fuel farm, which serves both aircraft and ships.
“This is a significant win for Maytag Aircraft Corporation and continues to demonstrate our strong standing with DESC in running government owned/contractor operated fuel facilities for the U.S. military around the globe,” said David Nelson, Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officers of Maytag Aircraft.
U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay is the oldest overseas U.S. Naval base. In February 1903, the United States leased from Cuba 45 square miles of land and water at Guantanamo Bay for use as a fueling station. A 1934 treaty reaffirmed the lease, which can only be terminated with the consent of both the U.S. and Cuban governments or through the U.S. abandonment of the property.
“As a former Navy Seabee, I am particularly pleased we have secured this contract at such a critical Navy Base, which serves as a cornerstone to the U.S. 4th Fleet and is an important fueling point for U.S. and allied forces in the Caribbean ,” said Joseph A. Czyzyk, Chairman & CEO of Mercury Air Group, Inc.
